Murray Estates completes sale of West Edinburgh development site to Places for People
Murray Estates is pleased to announce the sale of a 110-acre site on the outskirts of Edinburgh to Places for People, the UK’s leading social enterprise.
The first phase of the Edinburgh Garden District – Redheughs Village – is set to deliver more than 1,300 homes of various types and tenures, including more than 330 new affordable homes. Plans also include extensive greenspace and a new primary school on site.
This landmark transaction marks the first major development to break ground as part of a wider array of projects planned for the West of Edinburgh. The site – located west of the city bypass and south of the A8 – offers excellent transport links and proximity to key education, leisure, and employment opportunities.
David Murray, managing director of Murray Capital, said:
“As a family business that has owned this site for close to 35 years, we’re pleased to see our vision for Redheughs taken forward by an organisation committed to creating sustainable, high-quality communities.
“It’s nearly 10 years since we first applied for outline planning approval, so this transaction also unlocks capital that we can invest in new projects that support our ambitions as a patient, entrepreneurial business.
“This development signals the start of a new phase of growth for the city and we look forward to seeing West Edinburgh come to life and contribute thousands of new homes the capital so desperately needs. We retain other strategic land holdings in the area and will look to develop options for these over the coming years.”
The transaction forms part of Murray Estates’ long-term strategy of unlocking value in its land portfolio to fund future investments. The development will feature a range of housing types, including affordable homes, alongside green spaces, educational facilities, and improved transport connections. Construction is set to begin in 2026.
Murray Capital remains committed to investing in projects that leave a lasting legacy, and this transaction further reinforces the company’s dedication to supporting Edinburgh’s future growth.
